Should I carry a left handed club in my bag?

I am right handed and my coach told me to maybe carry a left handed club in my bag in case I get behind a tree or something where I couldn't swing right handed. My dad thinks I should just turn my right handed club around and swing left handed. What should I do?

No need to.I am a left handed golfer who has been playing for 30 plus years and I can only think of 3 maybe 4 times that I wished I had a right handed club. In each case I took my putter,Yes putter, and got out of big trouble. You are not going to hit it far but its better than trying to get fancy and maybe even missing the ball completely. One small shot with the putter and you still have a chance at par.Try this, turn your club around and hit the ball and than use your putter.watch the results. Oh by the way I once seen a fellow hit a ball 40 plus yards with his putter to get out of trouble.

  1. Follow Dad’s advice. Use a well lofted club backwards and swing to get yourself forward down the hole and in middle of the fairway. So, something like a 9 - PW and swing easy.

PRACTICE this shot at the range before you _have_ to use it on the course. = )

You might do this once in every five rounds… don’t waste the club sitting in there to be used so little.

  2. How about 28 clubs 14 left and 14 right. Then you have it all covered.

  3. That isn’t good advice. The number of times you will have to use a left handed club are so few that a utility club or similar weapon is a more logical choice.Learn to hit shots left handed by turning over a right handed club. There will be times when such a shot is required and if you can perform it you may have a stroke saver.

  5. well most people are right that you wont use it very often and you can use a right handed club lefty but if you only have 13 right handed clubs then why not add a lefty club if you don’t have another righty club.

  6. Dad's right- you only get 14 clubs (any more would be a violation and possible DQ). You'll rarely be behind a tree (or whatever other object) and the possibility of needing any of your regular clubs is higher, so take a 3 or 4 iron (or 2 iron, if you carry it) and hit IT lefthanded.

Vijay Singh does this. the clubhead is flatter, making contact easier. the goal is to get it out and closer to the green, saving a possible "unplayable lie" penalty stroke. Don't try to hit a hero shot, just get it running to the green and you'll be OK.

  8. Yes, and you should also carry an extra putter in case Jesus and the tooth fairy attack you on the fairway and steal your putter.
